Think the old status quo in the near-luxury compact sports sedan category still holds? Think again. Genesis' entry into this field, the G70, is wowing drivers with its exceptional combination of old and distinctive design, fun-to-drive performance, advanced technologies and class-leading safety. Here we take a look at some of the differences in the Genesis G70 vs. the Mercedes Benz C-Class.
As US News pointed out in its review, the C-Class offers lots of standard and optional features, "but it takes time to get used to some of the controls." This can certainly diminish the fun factor associated with the C-Class. In fact, many drivers find the digital instrument cluster provides an uncomfortable level of information overload, and have a hard time adjusting to the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls. On top of that, the C-Class's infotainment system can be confounding. In contrast, the Genesis G70 offers intuitive instruments, easy-to-use steering wheel controls, and an uncomplicated infotainment system.
How about passenger space? Tall drivers appreciate the extra space provided by the Genesis G70, which gives you 2.6 inches more front headroom than the Mercedes Benz C-Class, with more leg and shoulder room to go with it.
Both cars offer a long list of safety features, from crash-mitigating brakes and driver alert monitors to available all wheel drive and around view monitors. To make it safer to back up, the G70 also provides a cross-path warning system to alert you to vehicles approaching from the side. This safety feature isn't available in the Mercedes Benz C-Class.
In terms of quality, J.D. Power and Associates' 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners ranked Genesis first in quality, and ranked Mercedes 14th. Clearly Genesis knows they've made a high-quality car, as they back the G70 with a basic 60 month/60,000 mile warranty, and give you an astounding 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain. For the C-Class, Mercedes Benz only gives you 48 months/50,000 miles of coverage for both the basic warranty and the powertrain warranty. And what about scheduled maintenance? Genesis gives you "to your doorstep" service, covering all scheduled maintenance for 36 months/36,000 miles. With the C-Class, you're on your own-scheduled maintenance isn't included at all.
